About Us

German has been taught at the University since the first years of its establishment. The Chair of German was founded in 1936 to become the first foreign language chair at YSLU. The first head of chair was G. Andreasyan, followed by M. Harutyunyan, S. Avetisyan, K. Atoyan, M Buyuklyan, and E. Khazaryan.

Apart from practical classes of German, the lecturers of the Chair teach theoretical courses, namely Introduction to German Philology, German Stylistics, Lexicology, Theoretical Grammar, Theory of Translation, Typology etc.

Throughout its existence the Chair has prepared many professionals. Initially the Chair was involved in preparing German teachers, whereas nowadays it trains professionals in other related disciplines, namely pedagogy, linguistics, area studies, political science, literature and translation studies.

A range of educational-methodological books have been compiled and published by the lecturers of the Chair of the German language: G. Andreasyan, the first head of the Chair, is the author of the first German-Armenian dictionary, indispensable to this day for learners of German and translators. The professors of the Chair M. Harutyunyan, S, Avetisyan, Zh. Hasratynan, K. Hovhannisyan, S. Voskanyan, L. Safaryan and H. Chanchapanyan are authors of many University and school textbooks and manuals. To meet the challenges of modern times and to organize the education process more efficiently, the curricula of all subjects taught, the work plans, general questionnaires and course guides have been compiled to be updated and revised regularly.

The lecturers of the Chair have attended qualification courses ever since 70-80s, at higher educational institutions of the former USSR, particularly at Moscow Institute of Foreign Languages after Morris Torez. Within the framework of the educational intergovernmental treaty, the most successful students of the German Department have continually had the opportunity to pursue their further education at Jena University. Most lecturers of the Chair have accomplished part or the whole of their studies, regularly attended trainings or conducted research at prominent educational institutions in German-speaking countries, such as Jena, Leipzig, Berlin, Frankfurt am Main, Frankfurt an der Oder, Wien, Heidelberg, Halle, Rostok and others.
